Day 24: What Chinese people really think of Westerners who invite them to eat at Chinese restaurants

Plates of food aren’t meant to be handed from one person to the next like a football. That’s just unsanitary. Besides, that’s what the Lazy Susan is for.

No, don’t move the Lazy Susan while I’m in the middle of helping myself to a dish. Have you no respect for other people?

And no, you don’t reach across and grab a plate just because you don’t want to wait for it to come to you. Why the hell can’t you just wait your turn?

Yeesh.

No, you don’t know better. You are not embracing multiculturalism. You’re just rude.

FFS STOP STABBING YOUR CHOPSTICKS INTO THE RICE LIKE THAT.

I never want to eat with these people again.

About today’s photo: sometimes, I just dread going to a Chinese restaurant with Westerners. I have many friends who know what they’re doing. With other people, however, it’s like Russian Roulette. Today, I caught the proverbial bullet. I needed a bowl of congee to wash away the experience.

The ABCs of ABCs is a light-hearted attempt to explain the ins and outs of Australian-Born Chinese culture for Caucasians who can’t make any sense of it. There’s a lot of idiosyncratic behaviour I get asked the same questions about, so I’m doing my best to answer them. Call it my way of bridging the gap between cultures.

  1. This made me laugh… although I’d like to consider myself as not one of those westerners! I think my table manners are a bit better than that!
