A few days ago, the media cooked up a storm over the 15 tonnes of garbage left on Coogee Beach after Christmas. They didn’t point the finger at backpackers per se; a few choice sound bites from willing attention-seekers who had no reservations with finger-pointing were enough to set off the outrage and the media narrative that would naturally follow. That is, either you blame the foreigners or you defend them.
Here at Cremorne Point, in the aftermath of New Year’s Eve, a small group of responsible locals began cleaning up the biggest eyesores. I took this photo at 6.30am. By 8.30am, a council-organised clean-up finished seeing to the rest of it.
Where’s the media follow-up now?
