Day 219: The ABCs of ABCs #10 – The cheaper it is, the better it tastes

Mamak, I’m told, has some of the most authentic roti you’ll ever taste outside of Malaysia.

But every time I come here, inevitably, some smarty-pants will declare it’s no good because Mamak’s prices are five or six times what they cost in Malaysia.

“SO BUY ME A PLANE TICKET TO MALAYSIA, THEN, YOU TRY-HARD FOODIE KILLJOY.”

Interestingly, these kinds of comments seem to come exclusively from Asians.

The ABCs of ABCs is a light-hearted attempt to explain the ins and outs of Australian-Born Chinese culture for Caucasians who can’t make any sense of it. There’s a lot of idiosyncratic behaviour I get asked the same questions about, so I’m doing my best to answer them. Call it my way of bridging the gap between cultures.

  1. Ironic to hear that those comments come mainly from Asians. Maybe it could be from a certain Asian demographic or generation. I really like Mamak and the roti here. The Maggi goreng isn’t too bad either. The dishes here tend to have some of the sharp “zing” like the dishes back in Malaysia.

  2. LOL! Yeah… I am a Singaporean living in Canberra and we have PappaRich which, as you might know, serves $15 roti prata/chennai. And every time someone points out how you can eat better prata for a fraction of the cost, I so want to ask them for the $800 to buy a plane ticket home.
