Day 292: The day terrorism came to Australia

Friday, 18 October 2014

I’m about two months behind on my photos. It’s actually Monday, 15 December, 2014.

Armed terrorists, one of them with a possible bomb, have taken around 40-50 hostages today at the Lindt Cafe in Martin Place. It’s a place I’ve been to several times this past year for client meetings and for social occasions.

It’s 25 minutes’ drive from my home. Ten minutes from my office.

The airspace above Sydney has been completely diverted and numerous ‘soft target’ locations such as the Sydney Opera House have been evacuated. Traffic around the city is chaos. All transmissions and broadcasts in the area have been jammed.

As I write this, friends and colleagues are posting updates to Facebook and Twitter that their buildings are in lockdown and that they’re safe. I’m still waiting to hear from one of my best friends, who works two blocks away from the siege.

Our Prime Minister told us to carry on with our lives like usual and that his finance minister will be delivering a mid-year economic statement as scheduled.

What the fuck is he smoking.
