I have no words to describe just how much I love I have for the new Guillermo del Toro flick, Pacific Rim. Like Kill Bill and Kung Fu Hustle are to martial arts movies, and Django Unchained is to American westerns, Pacific Rim is a glorious love song to every giant robot cartoon I ever grew up with. I actually wanted to jump out of my seat and yell “GET HIM!” as Gipsy Danger and Striker Eureka pounded seven shades of shinola out of the giant monsters. The last time I felt that way about a movie was Rocky IV after Ivan Drago killed Apollo Creed – and I was quite young then.
Pacific Rim is absurd and there are numerous elements of the story that don’t make sense. But none of it matters. It’s everything I’ve ever loved about Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tenkuu no Escaflowne, Gun Buster, Voltron, Patlabor, Macross and, as pictured here, Giant Robo. If any of those titles have any meaning to you, Pacific Rim will make you smile from ear to ear.
